The Foundations of Sustainable Fitness

“The first wealth is health.”  - Ralph Waldo Emerson

Fitness and health bring immense value to your life. Through fitness, you can:

  • Transform your body and mind

  • Revitalize your energy

  • Decrease your stress and increase your productivity

  • Overcome challenges and develop resilience and strength

  • Feel proud of the way you look, think, and act

Health: A state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. A state of vitality, wholeness, and strength.

Fitness: The condition of being physically strong and healthy; able to execute daily activities with optimal performance, endurance, and strength with the management of disease, fatigue, and stress.

Being healthy = being fit: capable, strong, resilient, full of energy and vitality

Fitness changed my life.

It can change yours too.

Fitness gave me a new outlook on life and helped me to see light on the horizon during some of my darkest days.

A significant injury playing college soccer had dashed my dreams and left me feeling defeated, discouraged, and depressed. I was on crutches, unable to walk for 6 weeks. Those 6 weeks changed my life and helped me fall in love with fitness.

I made up my mind that I was going to do anything I could do to keep me moving forward. I crutched myself to the rec center. I started lifting weights. Even though I could only do upper body training, I found new ways to challenge myself. Each day I made it to the gym, I felt a little less discouraged.

I learned how to be strong, both mentally and physically. I became disciplined and resilient. I started to build strength, endurance, and muscle and found confidence in my ability to overcome challenges. For the first time, I felt my potential - my ability to grow and improve.

Training unlocked levels of ability I didn’t even know I had.

“There are only 2 narratives in the human story: struggle and progress. And you can't have the latter without the former. All those ups and downs are what make us most human - knowing both joy and despair, loss and triumph. Welcome the struggle. Engage challenges wholeheartedly.” – Brendon Burchard, High Performance Habits

Fitness can empower you to do things you’ve never done before.

You can harness, develop, and maintain the power of fitness in your life by applying six foundations that lead to success.

  1. Belief lets your values and vision lead the way toward a future full of possibility and opportunity. Belief can expand your abilities or limit them. When the going gets tough, belief keeps you going.

  2. Movement creates progress and is the driving force behind your training and growth. Movement is what enables your body to operate in time and space and engage with the world around you. Training is movement forward. It’s how you embrace life and prepare for the challenges it brings.

  3. Commitment strengthens your belief and amplifies your actions. Ongoing dedication leads to perseverance, which leads to accomplishment over time. Knowledge + Committed Action = Power.

  4. Environment reinforces a positive mindset and behaviors that lead to success. It is a climate promoting dedication, challenge, and growth. Your surroundings can be a valuable tool for encouraging positive behaviors and mindsets.

  5. Support and accountability keep you on track and solidify your foundations. A support system is made up of you and your team of helpers, encouragers, teachers, and guides. Building a support system is a coordinated effort to put in place the means of connection, collaboration, encouragement, and accountability.

  6. Focus brings everything together - a concentrated effort providing you with a clear path of action. Your plan is the overall structure and methods you will use, guided by your goals. It consists of the main components of fitness training along with lifestyle, habits, environment, and support.

Building Foundations = Setting up Success

Anything built to last must have a solid structure. The extent to which you build and embrace foundations will determine how high and how far you can go. Weak foundations will impose limitations, but strong foundations will create opportunities.

The key to sustainability is a strong foundation. Foundations are building blocks that can take you to new levels of success.
